Located at the southern tip of Manhattan, Castle Garden was the immigrant processing center for New York from 1855 to 1890. As part of a program to rehabilitate Battery Park, the BatterConservancy has worked to raise awareness of America’s first immigration center and it’s vital role in the story of American immigration.
I worked on a team from Parsons School of Design in cooperation with the Battery Conservancy to create a website for the newly-digitized Castle Garden immigration records. The purpose of the site was two fold--1) to allow both the general public and scholars a simple interface through which they could access the records. 2) to educate the public about this often overlooked piece of American history.
My team concetrated on the information architecture of the site, attempting to create a simple, clean navigation and layout.
